Part of macOS
kernel_taskThe core of macOS
○ Leave it
Runs the Mac itself. High numbers here usually mean the Mac is hot.
What it is
The kernel: the part of macOS that runs everything else. When the Mac gets hot, it deliberately keeps the processor busy so other apps slow down and the Mac cools.
Why it might be busy
The Mac is warm, charging hard, or driving an external display. Usually until it cools down.
If you stop it
It can’t be stopped. If it’s busy, let the Mac cool: close heavy apps and give it air.
The verdict
○ Leave it. Part of macOS, or something that starts again by itself. You never need to close these.
